Mark Steinmetz

Mark Steinmetz

The Philadelphia Photo Arts Center is very pleased to host a free lecture with visiting artist Mark Steinmetz on Friday, March 11 from 6:00 – 7:00pm. His work will be on display at PPAC during the East of Eden show. Steinmetz has created a powerful and moving trilogy of photographs about the South, focusing on places where transition is a recurring theme. He portrays drifters, stray animals, kids, teenagers, car culture, telephones, convenience stores, and suburban sprawl. Beginning in 1992, Steinmetz photographed in the streets, neighborhoods and outskirts of Knoxville, Tennessee. This work makes up South Central (Nazraeli Press, 2006). The title of the book is derived from the South Central Bell Telephone Company that serves Knoxville, and their public payphones, which becomes a reminder of the area’s socio-economic condition. For the second part of the trilogy, Steinmetz turns his focus to Athens, Atlanta, New Orleans, Memphis and East Tennessee, and the roadways in between. These pictures make up his second book South East (Nazraeli Press, 2008). Steinmetz ends the series with Greater Atlanta (Nazraeli Press, 2009), in which he photographed Atlanta and its outlying regions, investigating subtle notions of progress. Throughout his work, Steinmetz creates intense black-and-white portraits and landscapes that reflect a sense of displacement and isolation that is familiar to many Americans.

Mark Steinmetz received his MFA in photography from Yale University in 1986. His work is in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. Recent solo exhibitions include Charles Hartman Fine Art, Portland, Oregon and Yancey Richardson Gallery, New York. He currently lives in Athens, GA.

Don't miss this one!!!

I dumped Langhorne Slim for Dirty Beaches.

Dirty Beaches

I went to Johnny Brenda's last night with the Dum Dum Girls as the main act.  However, I went to see the very first act, Dirty Beaches.  I came across his music while checking out new vinyl selections on the insound website.  I've always been into 1950's style easy going, rockabilly surf music and when I listened to his music for the first time, I was blown away. He has a very unique style, combining styles of Johnny Cash and Elvis with vocal comparisons of Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen.

Dirty Beaches

Dirty Beaches aka Alex Zhang Hungtai uses minimal guitar riffs and loops them so he can focus more on the emotion in his lyrics and voice.  When he does play the guitar, it is something to be admired because there is so much passion and he individualizes each note.  His music is more than just a catchy song. It is filled with nostalgia and memories while still possessing a modern flair.

Dirty Beaches

At the end of the set, the crowd yelled for him to play another song. He played 'True Blue' which he dedicated to his girlfriend.  He even found time during this song to pull out a comb and slick his hair back.

Dirty Beaches. Badlands LP

I purchased his 'Badlands' LP as well as the single.  'Badlands' is not on sale until March 29th so of course I was ecstatic that I could pick up a copy at the show.

You can pre-order a copy at Insound. here. Alex also maintains a blog: http://dirtybeaches.blogspot.com/ as well as a myspace to check out his music: http://www.myspace.com/dirtybeaches

The Fitness Republic of China

China is increasing in political and economic power. Its strength comes from its people. Its people take care of themselves.

Inspired by China and its people. Without Lulu Lemon pants or Nike sneakers it is remarkably evident that the people in China are much more aware of exercise than us in the West, both in body and mind. We have access to all the finest gyms and athletic wear we need. .. but apparently, it is not what you wear or how you do it. It is why.
